Free SIA security mock test
Sixty questions in 90 minutes on patrolling, access control, searching, alarm systems, radio procedure and incident reports, each with its answer explained.
Each attempt picks a new set of questions from a bank of 72, so you can practise as often as you like.
Asking the person to empty their own pockets keeps your hands out of their clothing, which protects you from sharps and from accusations.
Perimeter detection gives the earliest warning that someone is entering the site, before they reach buildings.
Access control makes sure only authorised people, vehicles and goods enter or leave. It protects people, property and information.
Same-sex searching protects the dignity of the person and reduces the risk of complaints against the searcher.
Lighting removes hiding places, improves camera images and makes it safer for officers to patrol.
Security staff often see incidents first. Clear, factual observations and notes can be vital evidence later.
Patrols deter crime, find hazards and insecure areas, and show a visible presence on the site.
Lost keys may mean the locks need changing. Delay gives anyone who finds them time to use them.
The question bank has 72 questions across these topics. Every attempt mixes them at random.
The Security Guard course has three exams. Unit 1 is shared with every SIA licence. Unit 3 is conflict management. This test is for Unit 2, the principles of working as a security officer: the day to day of guarding a site. It asks what a static guard, a patrol officer and a keyholder each do, how to control who comes in and out, how to search with the person's agreement, what different alarm systems are for, how to patrol so that you actually notice things, and how to write a report the police can use.
You are on a night patrol and find a door that should be locked. A delivery driver has no pass. A visitor refuses to be searched. Someone has left a bag by the reception desk. The questions are built around moments like these, and the explanation after each one sets out the procedure in order.
Learn the reasoning in practice mode first. Then sit the 60 question paper in one go with the timer running, because 90 minutes feels shorter than it sounds when you read every option properly.
The security officer paper has 60 questions and you get 90 minutes. The pass mark is 70 per cent, which is 42 right answers.
Searching people, vehicles and premises, access control, patrolling and what to look for, intruder and fire alarm systems, radio procedure and writing an incident report. Personal safety on site is a steady theme too.
The security guard course has three papers rather than four, because there is no physical intervention unit, but the security officer paper itself is longer than the door supervisor paper. The standard is the same.
Some of it. Searching, reporting and personal safety overlap, but the Door Supervisor paper adds licensing law, drugs and queue control. Use the door supervisor practice test for that course.
Questions last checked: 20 October 2026. These are practice questions written for London SIA Course, not the official exam papers.
